This week's Left Brain, Right Brain digs into the institutionalized hypocrisy of the Democratic Party:
Lance Dutson: You have to love Democrats. Everywhere you turn, they’re screaming about voter disenfranchisement.
Steven Biel: It's been a busy day at the Secretary of State's office. Progressives are submitting signatures for five—count ‘em FIVE—ballot initiatives.
We've got background checks for guns, school funding, marijuana legalization, ranked choice voting, AND minimum wage.
Lance: This is no way to run a state. Referendums are simply a way for big-moneyed interests to circumvent the elected will of the people. And it happens on both sides of the aisle.
Self-avowed socialist Bernie Sanders is beating Hillary by 19 points in New Hampshire and some polls even have him leading in Iowa. I remember when Sanders was the punchline of a hundred different political jokes. Now he's poised to be your candidate. What is going on?
Lance Dutson: I complain a lot about my own party, but you've got to be pretty bummed about Team Democrat these days, Steven.
The governor is wrong on so many issues, from his repeated false assertions on policy to his outrageous abuse of power in the Mark Eves case. But somehow, your party finds a way to screw up these situations and give the governor victories.
Impeachment is the crown jewel. Instead of weakening him, you guys continue to embolden him.
Steven Biel: So Lance, I saw your post in the As Maine Goes Public Square attacking the militiamen who took over that federal building in Oregon as “idiots."
But what exactly is the difference between what they're saying and the nonsense you and other mainstream Republicans have been spreading for years about President Obama's supposedly "unprecedented executive overreach?"
Lance Dutson: What's happening in Oregon IS pure idiocy. There are maniacs taping farewell videos to their families like suicide bombers. It's madness.
Lance Dutson: I don't think anyone would disagree that American college campuses are a bastion of political progressivism. In fact, more and more they're turning into the realized liberal state.
And I have to tell you, Steven, it's not an impressive sight. Thought police, safe spaces, trigger warnings... is this the America the Left is trying to create?
Steven Biel: Here we go... You and Donald Trump complaining about political correctness destroying America.
Lance Dutson: Some significant political theories are about to be tested in Lewiston: big government vs. fiscal discipline and optimism vs. xenophobic fear mongering. What's your prediction on Chin vs. Macdonald?
Steven Biel: Sorry for the cop-out answer, but it's just too close to call. Turnout is expected to be much higher than for past runoffs, and no one knows who will show up to vote.
I'll say this: Ben Chin started this race as a long-shot underdog. That he has even a puncher's chance now is impressive.
Steven Biel: So Lance, you got space on your car for your Trump 2016 bumper sticker? He's beginning to look like an unstoppable juggernaut—and he hasn't even started spending any of his yuuuuge fortune on campaign ads yet.
Lance Dutson: No way--for two reasons. First, I have a strict “no bumper sticker” policy. Living in Portland as a Republican has taught me a few things about discretion.
Lance Dutson: George W. Bush's foreign policy was the perfect foil for Barack Obama, and arguably launched him into the presidency. But after 7 years of Obama’s foreign policy, the world is engulfed in the flames of terrorism like never before.
From Libya to Iraq to Syria, this administration has allowed an abstract theory of pacifism to put America at terrible risk. The attacks in Paris must make progressives like you finally see that Bush's aggressive forward stance kept us far safer than “leading from behind.”
Lance Dutson: Democrats may have had a “come to Jesus” moment last Tuesday.
After letting you progressives drag them out into left field, it looks like the party of Ed Muskie might be tacking back to the center again.
Steven Biel: I know one contest where progressives won. I whipped you in the predictions game, 5 correct predictions to just 4 for you!
Lance: Split right down the middle, like a good Maine moderate.
