Vegan not best for the Environment

A different view of farming and diet.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/aug/25/veganism-intensive...

Much has been made of the methane emissions of livestock, but these are lower in biodiverse pasture systems that include wild plants such as angelica, common fumitory, shepherd’s purse and bird’s-foot trefoil because they contain fumaric acid – a compound that, when added to the diet of lambs at the Rowett Institute in Aberdeen, reduced emissions of methane by 70%.

In the vegan equation, by contrast, the carbon cost of ploughing is rarely considered. Since the industrial revolution, according to a 2017 report in the science journal Nature, up to 70% of the carbon in our cultivated soils has been lost to the atmosphere.

...

Our ecology evolved with large herbivores – with free-roaming herds of aurochs (the ancestral cow), tarpan (the original horse), elk, bear, bison, red deer, roe deer, wild boar and millions of beavers. They are species whose interactions with the environment sustain and promote life. Using herbivores as part of the farming cycle can go a long way towards making agriculture sustainable.

Yes but most meat in the U.S.

Yes but most meat in the U.S. isn't grazing meat, it's fed by massive quantities of bioengineered "corn" (i.e. the kind that makes ethanol that Trump and all others before him have subsidized).

If a bunch of people stopped eating meat, the demand for this fake corn would drop and you could plant other things there.

I'm not saying that's what people should do (I love me a good bacon double cheeseburger), I'm just explaining the argument.

The argument has been that

The argument has been that vegan is better and all meat should go away. I've posted a few opinion pieces making that assertion. The story posted reminds folks that intensively farmed grains, such as soy, aren't much better than corn and certainly not better than grass-fed. First time I've seen this view in the media, so it caught my attention.

Good points. Undoubtedly,

Good points. Undoubtedly, the massive U. S. subsidies for growing corn are unhealthy and inefficient on several fronts.

Corn is a public health menace, both directly as dietary starch (It's a cheap sugar substitute) and as animal feed, where it increases the proportion of fat in beef products. Corn should be grown for popcorn, cornbread, and bourbon, not gasoline, corn syrup, and cattle feed.

As an aside, the notion that a vegan diet is kind to animals depends on which animals one favors. The increased cultivation necessary for a vegetable diet would kill many more of the small animals that thrive in grain fields.

I think people take issue with the raising and slaughtering of animals (some that are more intelligent than dogs or cats). Obviously we are stepping into philosophical territory, but I guess the argument could be made that it's one thing to cause the death of something as a side effect of your living and another to actively breed and slaughter animals.

Vegans in general are loopy. I seriously think that the lack of something - iron, protein, who knows - really affects their thinking. Or, could just be a selection bias (you have to be loopy in the first place to decide to become vegan).

Hard to figure which came

Hard to figure which came first, chicken or egg?

Fine either way, but their militant insistence that I must conform to their way of life or be condemned as evil is disgusting intolerance and hypocrisy. I could leave them eating their veggies in peace if they would allow me to live my life in peace.

Lol, don't read the articles

Lol, don't read the articles if they prevent you from living in peace. What kind of loser snowflake let's loopy vegans live rent-free in his head? I seriously doubt you are disturbing their serenity with your paranoid little diatribes.

Oh, so ignoring the rising

Oh, so ignoring the rising tide of leftist totalitarian thought will work. I should just bury my head in the sand? What a great idea!

If you just don't read about Trump, what you don't like just won't affect you anymore... why do you let him live rent-free in your head?

If you just don't read my posts, they won't disturb you so much anymore... why do you let me live rent-free in your head?

Geez, this place needs a remodel bad... maybe a few knick-knacks will help?

Oh, so ignoring the rising tide of leftist totalitarian thought will work. You are mistaking that for the voices in your head. And yes, you should ignore them.

You jest, but there is a religion (Jainism) even more extreme than veganism where you can't eat anything that would kill another life. So, carrots and potatoes are out. Only nuts, fruit, milk. Apparently honey is out b/c it's collection amounts to "violence against bees".

The Jaines live that life of extreme veganism... but the Jaines don't have the militant edge - they don't demand that others must do the same.

It's a quick meal when you're in a hurry.

The fantasy that there is a conspiracy to take his Big Mac away and replace it with kale is even more amusing. AMG is a treasure trove of right wing paranoia.

It appears that not only is

It appears that not only is vegan bad for the environment, but also bad for the vegans themselves according to this British study.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6585789/Vegans-twice-sick-days-...

Vegans 'take twice as many sick days' as meat eating colleagues, report says
•New study found that vegans are absent through illness almost five days a year
•Two thirds of vegans admit to taking more time off work for minor illnesses
•Half of their meat-eating colleagues admitted to taking the same amount of time

If I knew I wouldn't get any meat, I'd feel sick too.

That wouldn't be Soylent would it? I still can't believe millennials are actually buying and consuming a product with that name...
