Anyone getting a Roku? UPDATE SATELLITE TV BLINKS...7/5/16:HowieCarr TV Show?coming to ROKU..7/30:MORE HINTS..AUG12:CARR A GO-GO

If anyone on AMG has received or getting a Roku [streaming media box] for Christmas or another holiday, there are dozens and dozens of channels that can be added that are not listed on the Roku home page. The
channels range from weather channels,tv channels, national local police scanners channels, fishing and hunting channels,Bridge channels. You can find the most obscure channel---if someone wanted to watch a channel for left handed people, there just may be one. One channel is for people who just want to watch trains pull into stations..thats it.
Lately I have been watching old episodes of tv shows you never thought you would see again, last night was Hazel[boy, did she get treated like a slave]. Other nights;'Patty Duke', Ben Casey. Highway Patrol,Baretta. There is a 24/7 3 stooges channel---only curly episodes.
I noticed on Ebay they are selling the codes to add the channels, if anyone on AMG wants the codes,PM me, all for the cost of free.

The wife and I rarely watch

The wife and I rarely watch anything but programs on Roku - mostly all from Netflix. If it wasn't for Fox News I would cancel my $60 a month DirecTv account. Modern television programming available today holds absolutely no appeal for me.....

We dumped our cable last May

We dumped our cable last May and have never looked back. Hulu + and Netflix together are $16ish a month compared to the $175 Time Warner wanted for cable WITHOUT movie channels. We have a Ruku in the bedroom because that TV isn't internet ready, and we love it! Haven't played with all the channels (some are subscription) but Hulu + and Netflix play through there. Cost $100 for the box, but no cable paid for that in a month. Most networks also have their shows on demand on their websites too.

I think Time Warner and other cable companies are going to fall be the wayside like video rental stores, unless they change their business plan.

Great to hear Lori. One can

Great to hear Lori. One can just about buy a new car with $200 month

Sometimes i think i am the poorest person in Maine when i hear people are paying $90-$200plus a month for cable/satellite . Until i got a Roku, paying $35 a month for satellite was a necessary hardship to watch tv. I could never afford to pay $100plus,nor would i, Tv is suppose to be FREE,especially if there are ads. Cable/satellite TV programming not only has ads, they cut programs to add more ads as well as play games with the volume with ads come on,they have ads on during shows. Then they have ad programs. Cable/satellite companies long must thought they have gluttons for punishment for customers, They have been right.

I can not see satellite tv lasting that much longer like cable, 2 dinosaurs, why have a dish on the side of the house when every thing can be streamed though an Internet connection. Even local channels can be broadcast via an Internet connection unfortunately at this time there is alot of last century FCC regulations in the way.

I have 200 channels [could add 400 more] on Roku, cost FREE. A movie channel [Netflick],$8 a month. There is also Amazon movie channel and 4 other paid movie channels that i take turn subscribing while giving Net flick a rest.

BTW,
justin tv , CODE FOR ROKU:JUSTINTV, my current favorite, streamed from England i believe. About 5 movie channels

ustream is full of live cams.
Add code: IN4DN gives you Utream where you can watch the friends of felines cat cam that Ric and George [WVOM] have talked about.
Also watch the Osprey Cam on your HDTV, where you can watch the sun rise and set off the coast of Maine.

Just thought of another

Just thought of another reason to dump cable/satellite and get a Roku or another streaming media box[there is now about a dozen of them].

I am not home, at work and work still has satellite TV . Its the middle of the afternoon, snow is falling and although its only suppose to be less than 5", i went to turn in the Weather Channel to see if conditions have changed, etc and the rest of the country which is having significant weather problems. 2:45pm in the afternoon, the once 24/7 around the clock Weather Channel weather station is showing................... pre recorded shows, current 'weather channel' show was on mining. The whole country has weather issues going on, Weather Channel has a show on mining.

On streaming media boxes like Roku, they have the Weather Nation...around the clock, live coverage,NO HYPE, weather reporting with more instant local weather coverage than Weather Channel.

I am looking at a Chromecast

I am looking at a Chromecast right now. It is in its box, waiting to be brought back to the store.
Google makes it seem easy to install. After an hour ,i gave up Installing it, it was telling me my Internet was not on,it was. Then looking into troubleshooting, i would have to set up a wireless network--i had one already...,make sure it was named, than add another password.... Chromecast does not come with a install CD and set up.

Roku does not have a YouTube Channel, but it does. The private channel that you can add to Roku: 'my video buzz' channel is You Tube. The 'my video buzz' channel is where you can watch old TV shows: The Fugitive,Ben Casey,Kojack,Hazel,Combat. Patty Duke, Dr Klldaire. Plus alot of cheezy movies, Saturday afternoon movies, the Green Slime, etc.

Roku,Chromecast,Apple, Vizioe box,Western Digital box...they all beat paying cable and satellite's $100-150 a month,times 12 times a year...times year after year.

The biggest impediment for me

The biggest impediment for me would be the loss of Fox News. Is there any way to receive Fox News except for cable, or satellite? Time Warner only makes Fox News available on its deluxe lineup.

Dish did / does the same

Dish did / does the same thing, Fox News Live is available on their about$70-100plus a month deluxe packages. I believe it is because Fox News charges satellite and cable companies more.

I liked and watched Fox News on satellite but i have found it easier to live without Fox News and a $100 more in my pocket every month than watching Fox New and a $100 less every month.

Is Fox News Live available on Roku? Roku does not have a Fox News live feed channel.
However, all of Fox News Live programs [delayed basis] can be watched on Roku. code: foxnews.

How's everyone who emailed me

How's everyone who emailed me about codes for Roku doing?
Over the past 2 months Livestream [code= 'livestream'] has added dozens of *live* news channels from across the country and New England [mostly local Fox channels not local Maine Foxes as of this date].. FOX25Boston welcomed Maine viewers a couple of weeks ago That is the channel VB [from the Howie Carr] is a daily co host.

Ustream live cams has added 2 live Maine cams
Lately my 'first go to channel' is JustinTV [Entertainment>Movies section}

Of that list
"PlayOn Personal MYPLAYON PlayOn"

is the likely the best channel on Roku although Play On has a monthly charge of about $7 a month.
The Play On [a server ] which i have subscribed to for 2 years but stopped recently, gives you all these channels:
http://www.playon.tv/content-channels
Plus you can add these channels to the Playon Channel [most are free, some a one time charge]:

Re:

Re:

If one of the local Maine Fox News channels goes on the Livestream channel like many other local Fox channels have done in the past 60 days, that would be a big plus. That means one more less reason for paying cable/satellite a $50-$100+ a month.
Once in a while, Justin Tv has an all 24/7 Steven King movie marathon.
Channel 2 WLBZ News [broadcasts only when Channel 2 has newscasts] is currently a channel via the Playon channel .

Code ENGBH adds a channel for listening to about 3 dozen Maine police, fire, and public safety live scanner feeds

Code 9MQBZ is getting ready to add Portland ,Maine area traffic cams

Wow! 'They' [whoever they is] they say 90% of posters in a forum do not post. After i posted the code for Filmon yesterday i got many private emails from members of AMG whose names i have never seen in the forum

Your welcome on the Filmon code. To answer the question, most codes can somewhat easily be found on the Internet. They are often called 'Private channels'. 'Private' channel is not an euphemism word for adult channel.

Dont waste your money paying for the codes.

And I was one of them!

I am sure the others did the same is I did, and we did not look at the date of the original post saying that you would supply codes if we PM'd you. I noticed how old it was after I had PM'd you.

There are many like myself. I've been a member for over 12 years, and used to post once in a while but have fallen into read only mode on most issues. I learn so much that way, and I don't raise my blood pressure either.

It would be interesting to

It would be interesting to see the real cost of these various things after one have them for a year.
These products are all Wi Fi based . if so what is the cost of that a month ,internet provider cost .
One usually ends up buying other services ,the some are subscription services, the actual costs
tend to rise.

I have an Apple TV box which

I have an Apple TV box which is also WiFi based. My service is cable, providing internet, TV, and phones. The internet component is by far the smallest. Even adding Netflix for $9 / mo, it's negligible in the grand total. In fact, I'm seriously considering dropping the TV part altogether. It's 300+ channels and I watch maybe 6, tops. I would lose only the "local" channels, and I'm starting not to care.

re:
Initial cost of a Roku $100 that lasts at least 4 years

$55 Internet a month:Roku programming,computer internet,phone.
$8 for Netflick,
[Occasionally, about once every 3 months ,$4 for a rented movie via at Vudu,Target movies,Amazon,or Movies to Go. ]

About $67 a month with taxes with Roku

Roku is not perfect, once in a blue moon frustrating, but it is not $100+ like cable or satellite with dozens of extremely commercialized programming.
Recently, Dish contacted us about restoring satellite TV,we first said no,no, and no. We told them we only were watching local channels with satellite TV. They offered a special under $20 package local channel package . We said yes, so now pay under $20 for a local channel package with Dish.

Roku $67 a month
Satellite $18 a month
$85 total cost
About to get rid of satellite again
Every couple of months we rest and stop Netflick

We had Satellite's basic program package at about $50 4 years ago..no deluxe movie channels.
From what i hear satellite/cable is $100-$200plus a month now with more and louder commercials

Depending on ones'

Depending on ones' entertainment preferences and circumstances the various options available while not cheap do
offer substantial value compared to other options.
A first run movie theater experience even matinees get very close $25 for two .
Music entertainment ( concerts) if one attends are out of sight inmost cases.
Everything at some point suffers from price creep !

I thought Roku was that 2

I thought Roku was that 2 wheel drive motorcycle that floats and is made in NH. I had to see what all the chat was about.

How does this free TV work? If it comes over the internet it won't work out here in the woods. I can go make a coffee while a one minute YouTube video downloads. A one hour TV show would take a couple of days to download.

re:
The programs are streamed on Roku, other media boxes. You do not download programs.

I believe your Internet speed has to be a minimum of 5 Mbps, 7 Mbps is livable, 11Mbps is comfortable. Over 20 Mbps is very recommended. Hav 11 mbps and have no complaints

Incidentally, i tried Chomecast, Zeki,NeoTV and a couple of other streaming boxes. They were not as user friendly as Roku. I accidentally bought a program.contacted Roku by email, next day the program was gone, money refunded.
Roku is in the driver's seat for streaming boxes for the time being.

The Washington Post January

Anyone get a Roku [or other streaming media box] this past month/lately?

The Washington Post January 23
Cable TV is about to get more expensive for millions of consumers because of a bidding war between networks and the country’s most powerful sports leagues.
Time Warner Cable, Cablevision and scores of rural cable providers are tacking on sports surcharges each month, the direct result of higher fees they are paying to ESPN and other sports networks to carry their channels....
