In the early 1960s I was

In the early 1960s I was working on a job in South India, building a power plant for one of India's government electric companies. Employed on that project were a group of elephants, used to clear the forest for the plant and the roads with which to support it. Elephants were used because India did not make them. and hadn't the foreign exchange to buy them. Their trainers were paid next to nothing and trained the elephants to work because it brought them income but only if they were able to find work for them. The elephants worked because if they didn't they would have to survive in the wild , meaning they would have to forage on their own for food.

An elephant when working required over 600 pounds of food and when idle quite a bit less. Even then they have to keep moving because when they eat what is available in one spot they must move on to the next and it will be a year before that which they left to grow back.
\
When the project was over and if there was no other work for the elephant he was turned loose in the wild and the trainer also. If the trainer could find no other work or survive on charity he would die but the elephant could perhaps live on as long as there was enough food in the wild. I almost forgot, what about the survival of the species.

The last thing an elephant trainer wanted was more elephants. In order to prevent this he had to chain his males and keep the females separated, at least until the urge wore off. If he allowed them to mate, not only would he lose out by the reduced capacity of the female for work, but another mouth to feed for which he could obtain no income.

Fast forward to today and no one works elephants, not even in India do they use elephants as work animals, just as we don't use oxen or horses for anything but amusement. They still however eat and therefore produce nothing tangible in exchange for their food. Remember, they were once used to enhance the effectiveness of warriors but have now been replaced by trucks, jeeps and planes. Now, a few bleeding hearts believe these animals are being forced to do something unnatural just for their pleasure when they are really doing it in order to survive. If you take away this opportunity you doom the elephant to a Zoo that cannot afford to feed them without increasing the number of people who will pay to see them do nothing or, to having to be put down.

No one gives thought to the trainer who is now out of a job and income on which to survive, If he has no other skills he must compete with the thousands of other unskilled for the few jobs available, The alternative is charity is he can find people who are willing to share their surplus or a government who will provide it. Where does the government get it. It takes it from the people in the form of taxes but when it begins to impinge to strongly on the payers it runs the risk of being ousted so it prints money through borrowing from itself with IOUs thereby further reducing the value of all that it previously issued.

I believe it was Ronald Reagan who coined the phrase beware the people who say they are from the government and are here to help you. The price of that obedience, that is not stealing to survive, is to do what they say and not as they do. The irony is that the government actually takes better care of criminals than they do of the those really in need.

Bruce brings up a situation that will successfully be employed because who could not sympathize with the benevolence being shown to the poor elephants. The problem is when he brought this up he ignored the ridiculousness of the method being employed to achieve an objective that is not only impractical but unobtainable. It is kicking the can the down the road because it doesn't solve the problem at hand because it is neither a problem for the elephant or his trainer and creates two problems in its place and they are how to enable both the elephant and trainer to survive.

Today, a growing number of us are becoming the elephant. If you cannot work to earn a living you will not survive. Small children cannot work. The elderly cannot compete against the younger for the few jobs outside those in government or firms whose major customer is the government or supply a service that can only be performed in the country. Even the younger worker cannot compete when the few jobs still available are protected by seniority rules because they do not keep pace with the growth in population.

Bruce's example is just the tip of the iceberg, but stands out because of it unique nature. The vast majority are just as stupid but much more subtle. On Monday next, the Brunswick Town Council will vote to ban the use of plastic bags in the supermarkets and supposedly the mom and pop stores and every other store in town. Hannaford and Shaw's will go along because they want to be compliant and will pass whatever increased cost ultimately to the consumer, just as every corporation passed on their corporate taxes to their customers. There is no free lunch. The stupidity that is reflected in this action is that although the Town may have the power to regulate commerce, it does not have the power to ban it. It acknowledges that fact when it does not put a cost on non-compliance. If you go to the grocery store, as most of us do, you will be confronted by the fact that practically everything you buy is sold to you in a plastic container, including every loaf of bread, cut of meat, every jar of pills and every quart, pint or half-gallon of any liquid. If not its in metal cans.

I expound on Bruce's tale, not because it is unique, but it is illustrative of what we have become and that is a nation that has not been taught to thing for ourselves and the consequences of our action. We no longer question "authority" because we have been taught to believe its truths because their consequences do not materially effect the vast majority of us. Do as I say and not as I do.is all it takes to keep the robots in line.

What about the men ono the flying trapeze, the wire walker, the acrobats and the clowns? Aren't they doing something unnatural for our amusement. What about the singers, comedians, actors and actresses who exaggerate normalcy for our please and amusement?

That you and probably most others on AMG don't know the difference speaks volumes about your character and partially explains the tRump adulation. I know you're not a big fan, pmcon, but you might as well be.

Actually, Corsetti's on Rt. 302 in Westbrook has great woopie pies, and since Bruce lives in the area it would not surprise me if that he is aware of this.

Moxie is...an acquired taste, in some ways reminiscent of malted battery acid. But I tend to avoid soda in general, so I might be biased.

Smegma jr. appears once agin.

Here's is a little background on this thread. Every once in awhile we need a break from all the high intensity hyper crap
that has been in this forum since election. I was hoping for a little change. That is impossible now.

Ugenetoo and others have at it on Smegma jr.

Barnum and Bailey went out of

Barnum and Bailey went out of business this year because uniqueness pays up until the time being unique doesn't pay enough to put food on the table. When you deny income to an elephant trainer, dog trainer or any other animal trainer you deny them a livelihood because no one is going to hire a person whose only skill is not in demand except as a slave and even slaves have to eat and they are becoming a dime a dozen.

We should have recognized the frailty of the system we have adopted to govern ourselves when the means of exchange we used to govern our commerce was costing more to produce than its imputed value. The only thing that makes everyone the same is the fact we all need about the same amount of food calories (kcal) to survive and we should have stopped producing more people at that point, but no. We continued giving more to one segment of the population because man's ingenuity allowed us to expand the food supply by gleaning more from each acre of land.

This is a long tale and can continue almost indefinitely the beneficiaries of the system can perpetuate it by continuing to print more money and the more they print the faster the inevitable collapse will come because in order to delay it they have to increase the population that much faster.

I can explain it all and offer a solution but it would require you either think for yourself, which people like Bruce don't want to train you to do. It is also necessary to try and stop someone who has escaped their grasp and learned it on his own from telling you what they don't want you to hear.

Why does the owner of this blog allow me to spout and the rest of you as well, because controversy pays and unlike the circus all you need to do is keep it coming and you provide a means for the advertisers to reach out to more customers who would stop paying if the audience wasn't big enough. Lies are more popular than the truth and certainly more profitable..
